FOODS YOU SECRETLY LIKE

Guilty pleasures and exotic delicacies aside, do you ever feel embarrassed about something that you eat and really enjoy?

At the risk of losing credibility as a self-proclaimed foodie, I have to admit that I love this little Mediterranean fast food place called Garlic Crush, located in Bellevue, WA. In particular, I am amazed that you can pretty much mix everything together and miraculously, it still tastes good.

WHAT?! I am the girl that hates having flavors mix when they are not supposed to. As a child, if I ever went to a buffet, I made sure to keep at least an inch of space between any two items, so as to avoid sauces running together. My older siblings went through a phase where they would take portions of the five or six Taiwanese dishes, that my mother painstakingly cooked, dump them together into their bowls of rice porridge, and stir it all together. I wrinkled my nose and childishly deemed the mixture “pig slop.”

Fast forward twenty years and I am now embarrassed to announce that I mix my foods. Well, not to that same extent, and only from this one restaurant.  Continue Reading →

SERVICE WORKERS AND PASSIONS

I think, as a society, we have the tendency to look down on people who work in the service industries. We see them perhaps as less intelligent or less hardworking, because they haven’t managed to claw their way to the top, or they lack the ambition/dedication to work in a profession that makes them lots of money.

Despite having worked in the service industry myself, I sometimes fall prey to these kinds of prejudiced thoughts. They’re wrong. Services jobs are not necessarily easier than other jobs, but they require a different sort of skills, and, I think, a different kind of personality. Not inferior or superior, necessarily, just different.

Since graduating from UW, I have been trying to narrow down a career path, and I have found that I have an extra criterion. Certainly people think of what they really enjoy doing, and what they are passionate about, but lately I have been considering whether I can tolerate, so to speak, a job that doesn’t garner general societal respect. APPRECIATION FOR GREAT WORKERS

Recently, on a whim, I submitted written commendation for service provider that I thought was particularly outstanding.

April, is a “mere sales rep,” however whenever I have any questions or problems, she goes above and beyond the call of duty in order to help me solve all issues. She is extremely friendly, resourceful, efficient! and is everything you wish a customer service rep could be. Ask her anything, even if it outside of her jurisdiction. She knows where/how to find answers, and she will call you back in 10 minutes. When she does, she gives a thorough answer, for your future reference, but don’t worry this time because she’s already taken care of it for you.

Amazing. As a society, we commonly dread picking up the phone and waiting on the line for 20 minutes in the effort to finally contact a real person who might be able to pretend that he/she is helping you. Most of us come away from the phone an hour later, extremely pissed that we wasted precious time talking to the dumb-as-rocks rep who must hate his life. This is what we have come to expect when we have to make these sort of calls. Continue Reading →

SHOES!

I am officially a “shoes!” girl.

Believe it or not, this is a recent development. I went from “I only own 10 pairs of shoes, including 4 pairs of dance shoes, and a pair of climbing shoes…” to “woww… I really want some ‘wtf?!’ shoes!” Previously, I felt shoes  had two purposes: to protect feet and to cover up the fact that feet are kind of ugly. Not being one to accessorize, the “wonders” of shoes (and their apparently ability to finish off a stellar outfit) was completely lost on me.

This new found appreciation started with Jeffrey Campbell. You already know that I love design, but seeing the ‘Skate’ (pictured below) was the first that I really thought about design in shoes. That being said, I don’t think I will ever become the girl with a whole closet full of shoes, but I am the girl on the lookout for well-designed shoes. In particular, I have a thing for what I call “wtf?! shoes.” You know, the ones that make you go “holy shit, holy shit! WHAT THE F*CK ?! That’s amazing!!”

Below, I have some pictures of current favorite shoes, that I wish I owned. All beautiful, some are more WTF than others, and some more functional for everyday. Enjoy!

8oz BURGER BAR

After much anticipation, Pedro and I finally paid our first visit to the acclaimed burger joint last night.

Ordered the “world’s best grilled cheese” sandwich, the one that Oprah apparently dreams about. The famed Short Rib Grilled Cheese features paese cheese, onion jam, and slow cooked short rib. Per the bartender’s suggestions, I fluffed mine up with some avocado and bacon. The sandwich arrived simply plated: sliced bread from an oval loaf cut on a bias, the sandwiches overlapping and a few sprigs of fresh herbs for color. Nice presentation and really showed of the perfectly crisp bread with beautiful golden marks from the panini-press. Continue Reading →

GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

  1. Be more overtly optimistic – I think outside observers sometimes wonder if I’m bi-polar (exaggerating, of course) since I look so happy and bouncy one minute, but angry the next. The truth is, I’m not really angry, sad, or even agitated. I’m just finicky, and I tend to emphasize it more than other people, so I seem less happy or more pessimistic than I actually feel. Must curb my enthusiasm, heh.
  2. Become “Highly Proficient” or “Advanced” at Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom. Build a portfolio. Also, saving up for a pressure-sensitive tablet.
  3. Become proficient at Illustrator, (auto?)CAD, HTML, and CSS.
  4. Start dancing and rock climbing regularly again.
  5. Cook more, eat out less.
  6. Blog at least twice a week, on average.
  7. Take pictures frequently.
  8. Remember to take breaks and do eye exercises.
  9. Sleep like a normal person, rather than excessively.
  10. Reconnect with old friends.
  11. Manage time more efficiently. Specifically, relearn to focus more on individual tasks rather than trying to start many at once, and never get very far on any of them. Must learn to be realistic in goal-setting.
And… if there is time before the year is over: Learn to program in C#, and/or learn advanced sewing techniques, and basic patterns and draping.

PASTA WITH WILD MUSHROOM CREAM SAUCE

Recipe (I don’t really measure when I cook, but I’ll try to be more specific in this):

Ingredients:
1 pound or so of mushrooms (use whatever you like or whatever is available. I like mixing fresh cremini with dried porcini. The mix is a matter of preference but I like having half dried because after reconstituting the mushrooms, I use the mushroom water in the dish like mushroom broth. If you use all fresh, consider adding mushroom broth to your grocery list.)
1/2 large onion – diced
1 – 1.5 tsp garlic (I used minced garlic from a jar)
1/2 cup? 3/4 cup? of cream – heavy or light, whatever. I think next time I will try 2% milk, to make it a little less unhealthy.
2 tsp flour
12 oz Pasta (any shape is fine, though I like Barilla Campanelle, Farfalle, and Penne)

Optional:
Seasoning – to taste (salt, pepper, maybe oregano, or thyme, sage, or rosemary)
Chopped fresh chives for garnish
Truffle oil (my personal favorite) Continue Reading →

I’M BACK!

After a VERY long hiatus I’m back! Sorry for the long wait, I got caught up in school and stuff, but I hope to make it up with this long entry (pictures later). I figure it’s a good time to start again because it’s Restaurant Week in Seattle! :D

However, the highlight of this entry is NOT from Restaurant week.

Friday night, I tried BOKA Kitchen and Bar for the first time (sorry no pictures). It was pretty tasty. I always feel that things are starting off well when I encounter drink menus that have a decent list of non-alcoholic beverages that go beyond the everyday soft-drink or iced tea. In this respect, BOKA made a good impression from the beginning. They feature a rotating selection of housemade sodas as well as mocktails. The fact that I was disinclined to try a few flavors did nothing to sour my mood (Jalepeno and cilantro soda anyone? “Not I.” said the Cat. =P bonus points if you get the reference). I was a little intrigued by a spritzer that featured prickly pear puree, ginger and lime, but finally took the waitress’s suggestion and opted for the Red Havana. Continue Reading →

LOUNJIN

So I’m currently sitting in a lovely little cafe/sake lounge in the middle of “The Ave” in the U District in Seattle, WA. A mere two blocks from the UW campus, Lounjin is a sophisticated lounge that seems like a different world from the rest of the Ave. It’s airy, and medium-sized with deep scarlet walls, cherry-wood floors, blown glass lamps, free wi-fi, electical outlets at every table, a large flatscreen TV and modern furniture and somehow blends elements of modern japanese tea houses and sake bars with internet cafe without clashing in any way. The place is beautiful, has the lighting and ambiance of a nightclub/lounge and serves delicious tea (more on this later) but is utterly devoid of life beyond myself and the barista. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? -_-^ Continue Reading →
